A group of abnormal cells together can form a malignant (cancerous) tumor. There are different kinds of prostate cancer. Some are very slow-growing and never become a serious health problem. African-American men have a higher risk than other men, and they tend to get prostate cancer at an earlier age. Men who have a family history of prostate cancer also have a higher risk. How do you lower your risk of prostate cancer? Don't smoke Cut back on food with animal fat (like red meat, processed meat, cheese, and other full fat dairy products) Eat more tomato-based foods (like pasta or pizza with tomato sauce) Avoid too much calcium. Try to stay near the national recommendations: adults under 50 years old should get 1000 mg a day; adults 50 and older should get 1200 mg a day. The American Cancer Society recommends that men age 50 and older talk to their doctor about getting screened yearly. African American men and other men at higher risk may want to start screening at an earlier age, based on the advice of their doctors. There are different types of screening tests for prostate cancer, such as the digital rectal exam (DRE) and the prostate specific antigen (PSA) blood test. Often prostate cancer causes no symptoms at all. As the cancer grows, symptoms may include: Difficulty starting or stopping to urinate Feeling the need to urinate frequently, especially at night Pain with urination or orgasm Blood in the urine or semen Pain in the lower back or hips These symptoms are most often caused by other, less serious conditions.
