a loved one has been diagnosed with prostate cancer. he is 54 and the cancer was caught at an early stage and his bone scan came back negative. he is overweight but i dont know if that affects anything. he is supposed to be having the prostate removed within two to three weeks along with radiation. i love this person and i want to know what his survival rates are for beating this and living a normal life again.

About 99.2 as it stands right now. Don't worry he is not going to die.

There is no way to answer you without knowing the stage. The doctor will go over this with him after surgery. In a man this young prostectomy is nearly always recommended.

If it is diagnosed early ca.prostate then Laparoscopic radical prostatectomy is the best option and prognosis is very good. From the date of diagnosis, prostatectomy patients experienced an overall survival rate of 15.7 years, which is closest to the expected survival of 16.2 years. Approximately 75% of prostatectomy outcomes were progression free for 10.6 years or greater. Recurrence free success rate is above 90%.
