Suggestions of a great gift basket? My grandpa is on kemo for prostate cancer

Suggestions of a great gift basket? My grandpa is on kemo for prostate cancer.?
My grandpa is on kemo for prostate cancer. He's not nauseous and still has his appetite, but is diabetic- so sending sweets is out. He is so weak and tired- I live in NY and he's in Idaho- I can't be there to care for him but want to show him I still care so much- Do you have any thoughtful practical gift ideas? I call weekly to talk and tell him I love him- I just want to give something tangible that can help him feel better... i think i should give my grandma something too- she's going through soo much right now with him being sick... (they just had their 60th aniversary!)

Well you sound awesome!!!! I would get him things like crossword puzzles, Maybe some books. And When I was sick my kids got me lots of movies.....
2 :
How about a basket full of puzzles, cross words, those little twisted metal mind games that you have to undo and then re-do. Or maybe some paints, and paper. Those are busy work that's fun to do and hay who knows maybe he could make you some new art for your walls. Great idea for a gift basket, good luck, best wishes.

That is very kind of you to think of sending them a gift. There are lots of sugar-free items available through floral shops... What about sending cookie mixes (sugar free)... this will give your Grandma something to do instead of worrying... My thoughts and prayers for his speedy recovery...
4 :
you might want to get him: -sugar free cookies ( my cousin is around 40 and hes diabetic so my family got him some of those) - a new movie (might want that if he is sitting in his room all day)
5 :
That's very sweet of you. Does he like flavored coffees or teas? Maybe something like that. I know the peppermint tea made my father feel better, but he was a tea drinker. And green tea is very healthful so that may help him feel better. Maybe you could make a home video of yourself saying hello and telling how much you miss them and love them. You are a great person and wonderful granddaughter!

What's the five year survival rate for prostate cancer? (Other questions

What's the five year survival rate for prostate cancer? (Other questions)?
And what about for longer periods? Also, what percentage of men become impotent, incontinent, or otherwise impaired? Do younger men (under 45) have different risk rates or different prognoses? And what's treatment like? What kind of support is most helpful? I have a friend who may have it. :(

Prostate Cancer, is typically one of the slower growing cancers. I've known older men, who have had the cancer for more than ten years. The survival rate for Prostate Cancer depends on several things: 1) Getting treatment for it? ie. medication, surgery etc. 2) Age of the man 3) Other health issues. Because Prostate Cancer IS a slower growing cancer, younger males who can be diagnosed much earlier, have a much better prognosis for treatment and cure. The Screening and treatment of all cancers has improved over the past ten years, so that we a re catching and treating cancer so much earlier than we ever did before. If your friend has the earlier stage (stage 1 or 2) of the cancer, his prognosis with treatment is pretty good. Included below is a link to the prostate cancer foundation. you should be research and find answers most, or all of your questions there. Much luck to you, and to your friend.

I have massive prostate cancer-- am taking estrogen and gaining weight, Can I take testosterone

I have massive prostate cancer-- am taking estrogen and gaining weight, Can I take testosterone?
to build strength

No, taking testosterone would defeat the point of estrogen therapy. Metastatic prostate cancer is treated with estrogen because it blocks the actions of testosterone on the cancer cells, thereby inhibiting their growth. Taking exogenous testosterone would completely defeat this purpose.

What is prostate cancer/Malignant

What is prostate cancer/Malignant?
What is prostate cancer/malignant?

1 :
The prostate is a small gland inside a man's body. You can look it up on google.com. In some men it happens that they develop cancer in the prostate. If the cancer begins to spread outside of the prostate it is said to be malignant. Cancer which originates in the prostate can spread to any part of the body, including other organs and bone. There are many resources available online about the prostate and about prostate cancer.
2 :
It is cancer of the prostate gland. This is located just below the bladder. (Which is why prostate enlargement/problems causes urinary difficulty). To get an idea of location, here is a diagram: http://www.yourcancertoday.com/ContentResources/Image/prostate1.jpg Cancer is cancer -- it is a mutation of cell dna that causes a constant reproduction of abnormal cells.. forming "tumors". If it is prostate cancer, it is a tumor in this gland/area. Malignant is simply a term that means whatever was being considered (examined) is cancerous. Generally when a lump or tumor is found.. it is biopsied to determine if it is cancerous. If found benign, it means it is not a result of cancer, and poses little risk. If found malignant it means it is a result of cancer, and as such needs to be treated of course.
3 :
Prostate cancer is a malignant tumor that grows in the prostate gland. # Cancer Prostate grouped into: Stage A: The lump / tumor can not be palpated on physical examination, usually discovered by accident after prostate surgery because of other diseases. # Stage B: tumor confined to the prostate and usually found on physical examination or PSA test. # Stage C: tumor has spread beyond the prostate capsule, but not yet spread to the lymph nodes. # Stage D: Cancer has spread (metastases) to the regional lymph nodes or other body parts (eg bones and lungs). Sometimes the symptoms resemble BPH, namely in the form of difficulty in urination and frequent urination. Symptoms are due to cancer causing partial blockage in the flow of urine through the urethra. Prostate cancer can cause red urine (because it contains blood) or urine caused the sudden arrest. In some cases, newly diagnosed with prostate cancer after spread to the bone (especially the pelvic bones, ribs and spine) or to the kidneys (causing kidney failure).

Phase 2 Prostate cancer anyone have information

Phase 2 Prostate cancer anyone have information??
My father was just diagnosed with prostate cancer. The doctor said he's in Phase 2. We're gonna get the surgery in 6 weeks. I want to know how long I can expect to still have him around. Because the doctors aren't being very helpful.

That's a very big question. And no one can answer it. I highly suggest you spend all the quality time with him regardless of the outcome. Starting now. Most phase II's are removable, and long life remains. Still, love him all you can. You will never regret it.
2 :
Phase two is a relatively early discovery and is not dramatic news. How old is your father, the older one is, the slower is the rate of spread of the disease. Are you in the UK because 6 weeks is an awful long time to have to wait for a cancer operation. Doctors are not clairvoyants and cannot give you longevity forecasts but, if he is over seventy and at phase 2, I would say his life span may yet be several years, if he is older he may probably die of something else first. Do keep yours and his spirits up because, despondency is a trauma for the body that can only reduce his natural immunities and this is deleterious. Hope I have helped you. Good Luck to the whole family !
3 :
If your father's physician can't take the time to describe what Phase 2 means in relationship to your dad's prostate cancer then you may need to seek another physician. You should be able to get all of your questions answered in a timely manner and with a great deal of respect and understanding. I wouldn't venture to guess what your dad's expected outcome will be without a great deal more information but I will tell you to google prostate cancer and you will be overwhelmed with information. Good luck and God bless!
4 :
You do not specify whether your father has been involved in a clinical trial. There are usually two phases, I will explain - evaluation of new drug treatments for cancer involves a series of clinical trials. Phase I trials are designed to assess tolerance to a drug, and to investigate pharmacokinetics; such trials are usually conducted on patients with advanced cancer of any type for whom there is no known effective treatment. Phase II trials are usually cancer-site-specific and ask whether there is sufficient evidence of activity for further evaluation of the new treatment; the outcome measure is usually tumor response (or shrinkage), and establishment of the RECIST criteria has facilitated uniformity in determination of response for patients with different types of cancer. If this is not the case, I shall discuss prostate cancer in the later stages, here, it can spread locally into the surrounding tissue or the nearby lymph nodes, called the pelvic nodes. The cancer then can spread even farther (metastasize) to other areas of the body. The doctor on a rectal examination can sometimes detect local spread into the surrounding tissues. That is, the physician can feel a hard, fixed (not moveable) tumour extending from and beyond the gland. Prostate cancer usually metastasizes first to the lower spine or the pelvic bones (the bones connecting the lower spine to the hips), thereby causing back or pelvic pain. The cancer can then spread to the liver and lungs. Metastases (areas to which the cancer has spread) to the liver can cause pain in the abdomen and jaundice (yellow colour of the skin) in rare instances. Metastases to the lungs can cause chest pain and coughing. You state that you are expecting him to be admitted for surgery in a few weeks time. To be certain about this condition, you would be advised to write down what you want to know, and consult the oncologist or specialist involved, and ask about your specific questions. I suggest that you write them down because, all too often, when confronted with the specialist one or more items may be forgotten and only remembered after the meeting is over. Hope this helps Matador 89
