It's highly unlikely that you have prostate cancer, but you'll still want to be checked by a doctor for an inflamed prostate gland or (worst possible scenario) testicular cancer.

Prostate Cancer Help

Prostate Cancer Help?
Hi all, thank you for reading my question. My dad was just diagonsed with prostate cancer last monday. The funny thing about this is that his PSA levels started at 7.6, when they told him he might have cancer, he changed his entire diet around, every two weeks he had to go for blood work. Everytime his PSA levels kept going down. The last PSA level he had was 4.2 and the doctor said, everything seem to be ok, but if he wanted to be 100% sure to get the biopsy done. Well he did get the biopsy, last monday the doctor told us they found very little cancer. My dad decided to get his prostate removed, we are going to talk to the doctor again on monday to give him the decision. My question here is, if anybody knows why his PSA levels would go down instead of up? and does this mean his cancer maybe hasn't spread? He has done a psa level for the past 2 or 3 years know, and this is teh first time cancer was diagnosed. He is 56 but very heatly otherwise. Anybody out there with experienc

PSA level can fluctuate a few points due to a few factors. The biggest influence is sexual activity ( I know you don"t want to hear that about your Dad...) Second, infection in the prostate can cause an elevation in PSA. If the biopsy has shown ANY cancer the best course of action is treatment of some type. There are many ways to treat prostate cancer: Radical Prostatectomy(surgical removal of prostate), Brachytherapy(a form of radiation where small "seeds" are implanted in the prostate) External beam radiation Cryo therapy(the prostate is frozen to kill all the cancer) No matter which option he chooses please make sure he does his homework before making his decision, each therapy has it's own set of possible problems. Although prostate cancer is a slow growing cancer, at age 56 your dad still has quite a few good years so any treatment is better than none. I would be happy to e-mail more if needed also you can check out prostatecancer.com for a more patient- to- patient source of info. Good luck and best wishes for your father.

PSA is produced by both normal prostate tissue and by cancerous tissue. The most common reason for a temporary rise of this magnetude is infection. It's also possible that he has BPH...benign enlargement...which is contributing to his PSA reading. With a reading of 7.6, I'm surprised they didn't have the biopsy done earlier. If his choice is radical therapy, he should take some time and research options and practitioners. It takes more than 10 years for PCa to kill, so he has some time to think this through. The consequences of prostate treatment can be quite serious, and he should come to terms with the potential consequences before finalizing his decision. If his choice is surgery, then he should consider robotic prostatectomy, which is rapidly becoming the preferred method, thanks to lower trauma and rapid recovery. It's important that his surgeon have a great deal of experience. A surgeon who has done 1000 prostatectomies would be a much better choice than one who has done 50. Although every urologist can perform this surgery, there are a small number of "artists", who are considered both by peers and patients to be more capable than average. He needs to find one of these surgeons. The probability of permanent impotence following surgery is anywhere from 20-70%, with the choice of surgeon being the key variable. And he will probably be incontinent for a period of time, with a small chance that this will be a lifetime condition.

Prostate Cancer - Surgery or Chemo

Prostate Cancer - Surgery or Chemo?
What would you do if you were diagnosed with Prostate Cancer? I am in early stages with a Gleason of 6 and PSA of 3.9 - 4.1.
Cancer - 3 Answers

1 :
Chemo is not a standard first-line treatment for people who have early stage prostate cancer. Surgery, radiation, or sometimes even active surveillance (no immediate treatment) are the options you and your cancer physicians (urologist, radiation oncologist, and medical oncologist) should discuss. Certainly you shouldn't embark on any one treatment until you have sought consultation with each of these physicians and understand the risks and benefits of each option.
2 :
I'm just recovering from prostate cancer (had prostate removed )its really a personal decision you and only you can make .I strongly suggest you start reading all you can about your personal options.Of course you need to have the trust of your DR. and consider his advise.I found it very helpful to chat with men that have gone through it and there thoughts of the choices the made.there are some very good web sites to go to to learn about your options.read read read then make your decision.God be with you and good luck
3 :
With those Gleason and PSA results, you have a very good chance of cure with either a radical prostatectomy or radon seed placement. Chemotherapy is contraindicated.

Is prostate cancer even dagerous, or is it something that can easily be cured by a quick

Is prostate cancer even dagerous, or is it something that can easily be cured by a quick,...?
,..."ABRACADABRA!" by your local magician at no charge, whereas curing breast cancer is not that simple? I find it both ridiculous AND annoying that there are so many organizations, places, and companies ONLY advertising to fight breast cancer with those pink ribbons. I have yet to see a place that advertises to fight prostate cancer and to show that blue ribbon that represents it. I really hope this annoying and excessive imbalance between support support and advertising of fighting breast cancer to prostate cancer is only a passing trend, a phase, that will hopefully end in 1 or 2 years, just like I'm hoping this whole unfortunate women kissing women will be like, hopefully just a passing trend where they start going for and preferring men again(if women like women THAT MUCH, this wouldn't be new, this'd be going on long before the 15th century and men getting with women would have ALWAYS been hard to accomplish for men). Campbells soup, one or two episodes of the gameshow Deal or No Deal, KFC around the mother's day holiday, Yahoo webpage, even EBAY.com... HEY!!!, maybe KFC will one day believe in equality and start advertising to fight prostate cancer around father's day! I just think it's really sick and messed up that too much damn attention is going toward breast cancer while places, organizations, gameshows, and websites barely or totally fail to acknowledge prostate cancer. I guess we're believe that men with prostate cancer aren't in danger at all. Either they just go to their local magician and have them say "ABRACADABRA!" at no charge, or maybe they just to go GNC and take a certain supplement and it goes away, while again, breast cancer is more dangerous and isn't that simple to cure. Unless that's the case, I think it's hightime websites and other types of companies start showing the blue ribbon and start advertising to fight prostate cancer as well. Or am I just overreacting?

all cancer is dangerous.
2 :
Prostate cancer can easily be cured if caught early. The problem is men don't go for regular checkups, and by the time its discovered its very often too late. Breast cancer strikes women in the prime of life. The statistics are staggering. Its highly deadly. "While breast cancer is less common at a young age (i.e., in their thirties), younger women tend to have more aggressive breast cancers than older women, which may explain why survival rates are lower among younger women." Breast cancer also strikes men. So both sexes are at risk. Prostate cancer is primarily a disease of older men. Yes, I agree you could do with a Xanax. "According to the most recent data, for all men with prostate cancer, the relative 5-year survival rate is nearly100% and the relative 10-year survival rate is 91%. The 15-year relative survival rate is 76%. Keep in mind that 5-year survival rates are based on patients diagnosed and first treated more than 5 years ago, and 10-year survival rates are based on patients diagnosed more than 10 years ago. Modern methods of detection and treatment mean that many prostate cancers are now found earlier and can be treated more effectively. If you are diagnosed this year, your outlook is likely to be better than the numbers reported above."
3 :
The reason is because breast cancer kills or mutilates many more women than prostate cancer does to men. One is not more important than the other, it's just more prevalent. I think you're overreacting.
4 :
Give it time. The awareness campaign for prostrate cancer - and for men to have checks has been only a recent thing. Breat cancer awareness has been going on for a long time. In time advertising and acknowledgement of the condition will be equal to that of breast cancer and other common diseases. It should have been sooner but that's just the way it happened.
5 :
My father-in-law had prostate cancer, and although he underwent treatment and is cancer free at this point, his doctor said he could have left it untreated, and still had 15 or more years symptom free. Breast cancer moves quickly in nearly all cases, and so treating it quickly and aggressively is important - many with prostate cancer simply ignore it, and do just fine. In the long run, though, isn't research of ANY cancer treatment beneficial to the treatment of most other cancers? Understanding and paying attention to the disease is what's important, regardless of which part of the body gets it.
6 :
Well, men like Lance Armstrong are drumming up support for men who have cancer. I agree w/you. Men don't get enough attention when it comes to health. With that said too many men don't go to their doctor enough. Men, you need to be more proactive regarding your health.
7 :
It's not about women... It's a trend. If it was about women then cervical cancer would get as much attention, which it most obviously doesn't. Men can get breast cancer too. It's become a brand. People associate the colour pink with breast cancer. People are comfortable with talking about it. It's great it's getting so much attention but completely ridiculous other cancer charities are being ignored because of it. Prostate cancer isn't the only cancer being ignored and overshadowed by breast cancer. It's not a male vs. females thing... it's cancer. I don't know why people try to turn this into a gender issue. If you want to help how about donating to prostate cancer charities.
8 :
the prostate cancer awareness month is september and the ribbon is light blue. prostate cancer kills 30000 men in the us every year while breast cancer kills 40000 women and very occasionally some men too. the numbers are close. in the us the government spent $700 million on breast cancer, while prostate cancer received $500 million. the "Real Men Know All About It" campaign has been launched recently by the prostate cancer charity, and Boxer has teamed up with the Prostate Cancer Foundation to make new ads for awareness. most cities have their own grassroots organizations, like "Man to Man". you might want to join up and help raise awareness
9 :
Sheesh Heterosexual men won't even ask for directions when they get lost and would rather driver round and round in circles Women galvanise and drum up support Most men get prostate cancer in advanced years and don't die of it - they succumb to something else
10 :
You should get out there and start raising awareness rather than whining that other people won't do it for you, then! Breast cancer funding efforts are so successful because people actually get up and launch them.
11 :
There's nothing wrong with investing heavily in breast cancer research, prevention, detection and cures. But you are right that prostate cancer, which kills as many men as breast cancer kills women (see http://www.cancer.org/acs/groups/content/@epidemiologysurveilance/documents/document/acspc-026216.pdf - these are the statistics of the American Cancer Society). Indeed, men suffer from higher prostate cancer incidence rates than do women's breast cancer rates, the same mortality rates, and substantially more severe complications from treatment (these include incontinence, impotence, sterility, never having an orgasm again, incompetent bowels, etc.). And men also suffer from higher overall cancer incidence and mortality. Meanwhile, mainstream feminists have successfully blocked gender parity in federal funding for men's health. There are now 10 federal offices of women's health. There are zero offices of men's health. The federal government spends twice as much on women's health as men's health, though men die at higher rates from every major cause of death. You are right to be outraged. Of course, we all know that mainstream feminists have no shame. And how some of the responders to this question could write what they did, in light of the above statistics, is beyond me. Perhaps they have no shame either.
12 :
They need to change the colour from blue to transparent in order to reflect how invisible male specific cancers are to the public eye. Of course feminists don't mind this inequality because it gives women preferential monetary & research gains to the tune of 40x compared to prostate money & research. It's -yet another- area of inequality that feminists turn a blind eye. Strangely enough, all areas of inequality that feminists ignore happen to favour women over men. Amazing that, ain't it?
13 :
Yes, prostate cancer is dangerous. And the death rate is much higher than among breast cancer sufferers, the cure rate for breast cancer now is about 70%, whereas for prostate cancer it is only 44%. you are not overreacting.
14 :
When you’re about to undergo some type of enlarged prostate treatment, it’s necessary to first speak with your physician to find out if you’re suffering from a simple case of a benign enlarged prostate gland or if the problem is much more serious. Once you receive confirmation about your condition, you must decide for yourself if the problem warrants immediate attention. Does it bother you? If the issue isn’t that serious and you can live with the problem, it may be in your best interest to visit your doctor every so often to check it out. If, for whatever reason, you’re bothered by the enlarged prostate symptoms or your doctor feels you’re at a high risk for complications, there are several enlarged prostate treatments at your disposal.

Prostate cancer in your 30's?

Prostate cancer in your 30's?
ive been diagnosed with prostitus and a slightly enlarged prostate, and ive been sent for a psa blood test to see if its cancer, also a urine test to look for infection, im worried sick ive got prostate cancer, but im only 36, is it possible to get it

It's very rare to get it that young. You would be an outlier to get it that young b/c it would usually show up around age 50. Testicular cancer is a disease that can affect young people however and is much less likely as you grow older.
2 :
The other answerer is correct - it would be unusual at your age. Go to WebMd.com and type in prostatitis and read up on this condition and it's recommended treatments which may ease your mind a bit.
3 :
its possible
4 :
Prostate cancer is not diagnosed by a PSA and if you have prostatitis expect it to be elevated. Less than 1% of all prostate cancers occur in men under 45 years old.
5 :
Not very likely at your age. This type of cancer is an extremely slow one, so treatment options vary widely. See these links. Saw palmetto is your best, least expensive, safe, and effective bet. http://www.naturalnews.com/025859_cancer_Prostate_prostate_cancer.html http://www.cancertutor.com/Other/Prostate_Cancer.html

Can masturbation prevent prostate cancer

Can masturbation prevent prostate cancer?

I was wondering the same thing. Maybe it does since the prostate makes the seminal fluid, it makes sense to me that cleaning it out often would help it to not get stagnant but I don't really know about it. I hope thats true.
2 :
The studies you are refering to are from Australia and England. The references are on our website. According to the doctors I deal with on Prostate Cancer explain that it has no bearing on the disease.
3 :
No. Annual physicals after age 40 is the best prevention. If you get it, and they find it when it is small, the cure is fast and pain free.
4 :
No
