Serious answers only - Prostate Cancer

Serious answers only - Prostate Cancer?
My husband was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer - he is only in his early fourty's. - they will remove his prostate - my question is, if he does the robatic procedure, will he keep his errection? If not, what else is out there to help him? I'm afraid, that this will depress him severly (I know I would be depressed). What can I do to help him thru this and also afterwards? Can the cancer society help?

There is a new ultrasound procedure that claims to decrease the risk of causing erection difficulties. Many men have difficulty obtaining or maintaining erections after prostate removal, even with taking medications like viagra or cealis. Check up on the web, that's how I located the new procedure.
2 :
IF AT ALL POSSIBLE DONT DO ROBOTIC!! my grandfather had the robotic done and they knicked his rectum and it took about 2 years of pain and agony to finish this off.. if you go with the robotic have your lawyer standing by.....
3 :
I promise you, if he dies because he goes untreated, he will not have an erection for you. Treatment at least gives him a chance. Treatment results vary, but robotic results tend to be better. They allow more precision in destroying only diseased tissue, with less chance of affecting his sex life. He can still be a great lover, even if he does have erection problems after treatment. Show him that you love everything he does for you - that's what real potency is about, making the lady happy. Be ready to try different things with him. Find out what still works, maybe things you never tried before. There are surgical options; do some research and be prepared for conversations with lots of emotion in them. Some women have self-image problems after mastectomy. True lovers still love them anyway. Men might have self-image problems after prostate treatment. True lovers still love them anyway. Prepare for the worst. Who knows - you might not get it.
4 :
Chris, You are asking a number of very important questions. The first step in getting good answers is the identification of a doctor who is skilled in this area and can spend the time you need to go through it. Having said that ... Many variables affect post-op function, including erections. Younger men recover erections faster than older men, for example. In this, your husband has a relative advantage. It does not always make sense to keep or take the nerves. The decision has to be made in context of a cancer decision. What stage is the cancer? What grade was found on the biopsy? Can one nerve be spared? Should both be spared? These can be considered when all the details are known. The "robot" is nothing but a distraction. In other words, what gizmo the surgeon uses is practically irrelevant. You might want to listen to the two interviews linked below, especially the Prostate Net one on robotic prostate surgery. What truly matters is this: who is the surgeon? A good surgeon knows which tools to use to get the job done. To help you find the good surgeon, ask about his experience, focus, commitment. Talk with his other patients. If he won't introduce you, that's a red flag all by itself. You're already doing a lot for your husband. Women so often do. Ask questions, share what you find, and just be there.

Prostate is diagnosed more than breast cancer. But why isn't there equal support for prostate cancer

Prostate is diagnosed more than breast cancer. But why isn't there equal support for prostate cancer ?
Breast Cancer out paced prostate cancer research $548mill to $306 mill according to NCI(National Cancer Institute). Even though there are more diagnoses Prostate Cancer than Breast Cancer by 230,110 new cases to 215,990( www.cancer.org/downloads/MED/Page4.pdf). There fundraisers for breast cancer like the pink ribbon fundraiser which is great but where is the ribbon for prostate cancer ? There are telethons for breast cancer, 10k runs for breast cancer, collection on airline flights for breast cancer. There isn't equal support for prostate cancer even though prostate is diagnosed more than breast cancer. Why ?Why do we care more about women than men? Does anybody find this disturbing ?

1 :
Because breasts generally get more attention in day-to-day lives than prostates? I've met women who don't even know where the prostate is (can't say I blame them for not knowing, lacking one, and all). How many guys do you know who don't know where breasts are?
2 :
I have a theory about this, but I'm not sure many people on here are going to like it. I honestly think it's just another way to talk about sex and use sex to sell products (i.e. the pink ribbon stuff) without actually mentioning sex. Because, you know, even if the breasts are infected with a cancerous growth, they're still breasts. And breasts will sell products. It's better to donate your money or time directly to the organizations that help fund the research and not buy a box of cookies or do a fun-run and hope for the best, IMO. I know it's a big stretch to make, and maybe I haven't given this a whole lot of thought, but that's one of my theories. That said, Safeway is raising money right now for prostate cancer research (or at least they are out here in my little corner of the midwest). Every time I've been to the grocery store in the past two weeks they've asked if I wanted to round my total up to the nearest dollar to help fund prostate cancer research.
3 :
Sheer ambition? Women get psyched up about curing breast cancer and bring their husbands and boyfriends, sons and nephews... into the fight. I'm sure if men waged a similar campaign similar results would be achieved.
4 :
Men don't go to the doctor like women do for one. It's the way we are. Men have the need to be tough and being sick isn't tough. We have a I can beat it mentality whereas women love to share and bond over things like being sick.
5 :
I can't believe that anyone would begrudge support and fund raising for any type of cancer. It's not a competition. However, if you want to compare, the National Cancer Institute statistics indicate that while there are slightly more cases of prostate cancer diagnosed each year, deaths from breast cancer outnumber deaths from prostate cancer 40,000 to 28,000. Breast cancer is a more lethal form of cancer. Maybe that has something to do with it.
6 :
I have to post this every week. Because breast cancer is deadlier than prostate cancer. Men die WITH prostate cancer not from it. They are older when they get it and mostly manage without the expensive treatments. The exception the one type that strikes younger men that one is getting research $$. As it should. The five year survival rate is 99% and for breast cancer it is now 79%. As for all of those fundraising efforts - women did that. Men can do the same, no one is stopping you. Hop to it.
7 :
Women are better organizers???
8 :
Women are organizers of events and joiners of movements - far more than men. One isn't more important that the other, neither is one gender more important that the other. Its simply that the breast cancer issue has been around much longer, and was - largely - brought to great awareness by women. So - as men - what are you going to do about it?
9 :
It is all about marketability. Most of the products that support the Susan G Koman Foundation (the main organization) have more profit go towards the company selling it. It is easy, they just make something pink that would normally be made a different color...no expense to them other than the partial profits that are lost and go to the foundation. Breasts tend to be sexier than prostates, which makes them easier to market as well.
10 :
maybe because too many "men" are wasting time on forums like this, crying and moaning about how unfair the whole freakin' world is to them... (boohoo) even claiming CANCER research and fund raising is somehow an evil feminist plot against MEN? By George, I think we've heard it ALL now! Get off your own whining lazy misogynist feminist fearing butt and make things happen for the world of "men's cancer" just like women had to do. I seriously doubt you want to go down the "women get better health care" road, do you? Women specific health care is a relatively very NEW medical arena. 50 years ago, no one gave a CRAP about women's health issues... but now WOMEN do and have made everyone aware. Go out and do the same for men and stop crying.
11 :
There isn't equal support for prostate cancer even though prostate is diagnosed more than breast cancer. Why ?Why do we care more about women than men? Does anybody find this disturbing ? You are kidding, right?
12 :
Prostate cancer is very important and deserves more attention and funding. So what are you going to do about it? I think you should spearhead a campaign to bring it to public attention.
13 :
As reported by the US Government and the CDC, the top four deadliest cancers are the following: 1.Lung cancer 2.Colon cancer 3.Breast cancer 4.Prostate cancer And although prostate cancer is more common than breast cancer, 40,000 deaths are attributed to breast cancer, with only 28,000 for prostate cancer.
14 :
It is not just cancer research, because of feminist hate spending for all medical research beneficial to males has been cut. Birth control for males canceled now non existent, stroke cut back in favor of more spending on research that benefits female stroke victims, same for heart disease and other ailments. It is interesting to note that as soon as a feminist was elected to speak of the house she cut back on research spending for men's health while increased the amount spent on women's health. The current society only benefits women.
15 :
honestly, i've seen more awareness increase for prostate cancer. just wait awhile. it's not like its totally ignored.
16 :
Because breast cancer is deadlier. See Professor C's answer.

If it hurts to urinate, does that mean I have prostate cancer

If it hurts to urinate, does that mean I have prostate cancer?

Men's Health - 8 Answers

1 :
Not neccesarily, you could have kidney stones, a kidney problem, a uti (urinary tract infection) or even an std
2 :
you could have kidney stones hurts like h---- when you urinate
3 :
no, prostate problems can make it difficult to urinate, like taking a while to get the urine to flow, but it doesn't hurt. More likely you have an infectious process going and need to see a doctor for treatment.
4 :
No. Go to the doctor and ask, but it depends on the location and type of pain... and your age. If you are under 40, slim chance. If you are sexually active could be STD. If you are athletic, could be blood in the bladder or could be a simple infection, prostatitis. ONly an MD can diagnose and treat... so go see one now...
5 :
How old are you? Typically young males do not get prostate cancer, although it is not impossible. When was the last time you got checked for Gonorrhea or Chlamydia? Better yet, what does the pain feel like? Any unusual discharge? What color if so?
6 :
NO!!!....IT MEANS THAT IT HURTS WHEN YOU URINATE.... THE URINE MIGHT HAVE A LOW PH YOU MAY HAVE A KIDNEY INFECTION YOUR PENIS MAY BE SENSITIVE AFTER TOO MUCH INTERCOURSE OR MASTURBATION IT COULD BE A ZILLION THINGS. IF IT CONTINUES THEN GO SEE A DOCTOR. HOME REMEDY....CRANBERRY JUICE....DRINK LOTS!
7 :
No but it is wise to see a doctor about it now
8 :
lol...usually hurts to pee after busting a nutt. if you can wait for awhile after you jerked off to pee, it wouldn't hurt as bad.

Prostate Cancer/Breast Cancer Link

Prostate Cancer/Breast Cancer Link?
According to a story on Fox News, researchers in Australia have discovered a link between Prostate Cancer and Breast Cancer (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,356568,00.html). It appears that the same gene is found in both. My question is, if my father died of prostate cancer, does that put me at a greater risk for breast cancer? If so, should I begin having mammograms earlier than age 40?
Cancer - 5 Answers

1 :
Having a mother or father that has had any form of cancer puts you at greater risk, not necessarily for breast cancer though. Talk it over with your doctor. My mother had breast cancer and my father had prostrate (both died), but my doctor hasn't pushed the mammogram issue.....yet anyway! (I'm 42)
2 :
I agree with im here, but ask you to realize that the newest "find" is not more than a theory or a supposed "link" at this time. All sorts of things can be "proven" with studies and statistics. It is not uncommon that they are later shown to be incorrect.
3 :
Cancers of the sexual organs occur, most often due to long term sexual deficiencies in life. If the truth be known, everyone has a genetic risk for cancers of the breast and sexual organs. The reason genes mutate, and become cancerous, is due to an evolutionary adaptation that all animals have. In early human evolution, there were many challenges and dangers to the species. We very nearly became extinct on many occasions. In order for the human race to survive, our species had two advantages. One was our intelligence. The other was our ability to reproduce rapidly. When rescources, like food, water, shelter, etc were in short supply, nature gave the most advantage to the most productive of our ancestors. The ones producing the most offspring. Those not producing off spring, helping the species to survive, were possibly consuming scarce rescources that could better go to the one who were engaged in the business of reproduction. Those not engaged in the business of reproduction, (ie. SEX) were Expendable, and nature found many ways to accomplish this among them cancer. Just because you have an identifyable gene that could become cancerous doesn't entirely mean the you will likely get the cancer. There are substances in the sexual essences that prevent the mutation in the majority of cases. You may never have heard of this, and many will undoubtly be skeptical; But in years to come, lifetime sexual activity, will be the "Gold Standard" by which a persons risk for cancers of the sexual organs is judged.
4 :
I have also heard that there is a "link" between prostate cancer and breast cancer. My paternal grandmother died of breast cancer. My father had prostate cancer. I was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 41 last year. I was tested for the two breast cancer genes and I was negative. I am going back for more genetic counseling so intend on looking more into this "connection".
5 :
i have not heard of prosate and breast cancer being linked before but i have not been up to date on the news, my paternal grandmother had breast cancer and my father had lymphoma cancer i was diagnosed w breast cancer in nov 07 i was tested for the BRCA gene and was positive, my sister was also tested and she is positive she does not have cancer, but she is it risk since she carries the gene. the oncologist that did our testing said that ins covers it and b/c my sister had a relative that has cancer her ins cannot "tag" her w/ having something wrong b/c it is considered discrimination, hope that helps. i hope user "im here" reads this and gets here obgyn to push for a mammogram

Masturbating give you prostate cancer

masturbating give you prostate cancer?
my bud says if u do it once a month ur ok but evry day is bad, so ill getg prostate cancer than\!?
Men's Health - 14 Answers

This is false. Getting yourself off is healthy. It can get rid of stress and helps prostate health. Studies show that getting off 3-4 times a week will improve the health of a prostate not harm it!
2 :
Masturbation does not give you prostate cancer any more than masturbation gives you brain cancer. Your friend is scaring you to his sick amusement
3 :
lol if that was true then alot of guys would be dying.
4 :
I've actually heard that masturbation brings only benefits.
5 :
Sara is absolutely correct. But if your friend was correct then by his reckoning every single man on earth would be falling over dead right about now because we all do it 2 and three times a day, more when you're a teenager. BOTTOM LINE: jerk off all you want just use some decent lube and don't leave a mess.
6 :
If masturbating gives prostate cancer, the more than 90 per cent of men must have prostate cancer! Masturbation is not the cause or the remedy of prostrate cancer!
7 :
sara is right. there is and always will be a debate on this. the most studies say jacking it every day is healthy. the swelling/tenson in prostate goes down after ejacilation.
8 :
thanks, now i'm scared well this haves to be false but i'm still scared
9 :
yES, YES ITS TRUE.
10 :
There actually was a British study a few years back that concluded that men who were sexually active early in life had a higher incidence of p cancer. And men who increased their activity later in life had lower incidence rates. Later analysis proved the study's data to be incorrectly interpreted. But your buddy doesn't know any of this...he's just acting that way because he doesn't want anyone to know how often he's spanking the monkey.
11 :
There is no evidence of this happening.
12 :
This is just another scare tactic to stop people from masturbating. In my youth, masturbation was fraught with religious shame and guilt. We all risked eternal hell and damnation and did it anyway. We are still here to tell the tale. Now,...more intelligent and forward thinking professionals are admitting that masturbation has many benefits. It helps to promote a healthy reproductive system, it elevates the heart rate for a time, it relieves tension, it helps to REDUCE your chances of getting prostate cancer later in life, and it leaves you with a calm, relaxed feeling when you are done. None of this is bad for you. It seems like you need some basic information about masturbation so you do not need to stumble through your early teenage years listening to urban myths and half truths. No, masturbation will not make you go blind; no, masturbation will not give you hairy palms; no, masturbation is not a one-way ticket to hell, no, masturbation will not spoil your chances of fathering healthy children later in life when you choose to do so, (I have four sons); no, you will not run out of your lifetime supply as your body makes it every day you are alive; you can however, exhaust your daily supply by masturbating several times over the day. A good night's sleep will fix that up. It is normal for a young teenage boy to masturbate several times a day. Your body will tell you when it has had enough, simply by not giving you the urge to do it again until you have rested more. Every man, women, teenage boy and girl masturbate. If they tell you they don't, they are either lying or dying. Masturbations is a personal, private thing, and no one wants to walk in on you. Choose a quiet time and place, relax, and enjoy this natural, healthy, beneficial rite of passage into adulthood. With all the crime and attrocities in the world, the gods have bigger fish to fry than a young man pleasuring himself. Good luck with this. Mithras
13 :
It helps STOP having prostate cancer! Think about, if this was true then every man would be dead from prostate cancer..... Your bud is a dumbass, Sorry.
14 :
Actually jerking off will reduce your chances of developing prostate cancer. (fact)

If you sex with someone who has prostate cancer

If you sex with someone who has prostate cancer...?
My new boyfriend is a great guy and a real sweetheart but he has prostate cancer and is dying, so my question is if am i at risk of getting cancer or something if we have sexual relations?
Cancer - 12 Answers

1 :
About as much risk as he does in lower his intelligence in having relations with you.
2 :
I don't think that you can get cancer from someone. It is not contagious.
3 :
no of course not...cancer is not contagious. i do hope that your boyfriend recovers though...good luck!
4 :
If he is dying you can`t have sex. If he is not dying sex is harmless.
5 :
No, but it could be rather painful for him. He should probably check with his doctor before you proceed. I don't normally favor sex outside of marriage, but I think it is sweet of you to consider this step. The risk to you is virtually nonexistent.
6 :
Aren't you blonde? Cancers are not contagious.
7 :
No you can't catch cancer, I'd be more worried about AIDS,herpes and pregnancy if your having unprotected sex
8 :
no you wont get anything ,the prostate is on the outside of the uretra up in the body past the root of the penis.between the root and the bladder.just go into the grays anatomy book and you can check it out for your self.good luck L
9 :
Cancer is not a contagious disease. You do not get it from other people.
10 :
cancers are not transferred by sex... unfortunately, cancer is just something that one person gets, and cannot share with others... good thing, cancer is bad, and you dont want to have it
11 :
No! Cancer is NOT CONTAGIOUS!
12 :
love , cancer is not something that is contagious. it is either passes down through sex linked(either from passed generations in your family or mom and dad) or it can be because of smoking. cancer is not something you catch if you have relations with someone that has it. it is not possible. it's not like std's that people are prone to catch if they come in contact with other people who has it. good luck with your boyfriend i hope you guys spend as many time together as possible and give him all the support he needs. i thought i would lose my bf from cancer but i didn't he is beating it and that is the best new i have ever heard. i wish yours could have done the same. I'm sorry. good luck and god bless you.

It's highly unlikely that you have prostate cancer, but you'll still want to be checked by a doctor for an inflamed prostate gland or (worst possible scenario) testicular cancer.

Prostate Cancer Help

Prostate Cancer Help?
Hi all, thank you for reading my question. My dad was just diagonsed with prostate cancer last monday. The funny thing about this is that his PSA levels started at 7.6, when they told him he might have cancer, he changed his entire diet around, every two weeks he had to go for blood work. Everytime his PSA levels kept going down. The last PSA level he had was 4.2 and the doctor said, everything seem to be ok, but if he wanted to be 100% sure to get the biopsy done. Well he did get the biopsy, last monday the doctor told us they found very little cancer. My dad decided to get his prostate removed, we are going to talk to the doctor again on monday to give him the decision. My question here is, if anybody knows why his PSA levels would go down instead of up? and does this mean his cancer maybe hasn't spread? He has done a psa level for the past 2 or 3 years know, and this is teh first time cancer was diagnosed. He is 56 but very heatly otherwise. Anybody out there with experienc
Cancer - 1 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
PSA level can fluctuate a few points due to a few factors. The biggest influence is sexual activity ( I know you don"t want to hear that about your Dad...) Second, infection in the prostate can cause an elevation in PSA. If the biopsy has shown ANY cancer the best course of action is treatment of some type. There are many ways to treat prostate cancer: Radical Prostatectomy(surgical removal of prostate), Brachytherapy(a form of radiation where small "seeds" are implanted in the prostate) External beam radiation Cryo therapy(the prostate is frozen to kill all the cancer) No matter which option he chooses please make sure he does his homework before making his decision, each therapy has it's own set of possible problems. Although prostate cancer is a slow growing cancer, at age 56 your dad still has quite a few good years so any treatment is better than none. I would be happy to e-mail more if needed also you can check out prostatecancer.com for a more patient- to- patient source of info. Good luck and best wishes for your father.
2 :
PSA is produced by both normal prostate tissue and by cancerous tissue. The most common reason for a temporary rise of this magnetude is infection. It's also possible that he has BPH...benign enlargement...which is contributing to his PSA reading. With a reading of 7.6, I'm surprised they didn't have the biopsy done earlier. If his choice is radical therapy, he should take some time and research options and practitioners. It takes more than 10 years for PCa to kill, so he has some time to think this through. The consequences of prostate treatment can be quite serious, and he should come to terms with the potential consequences before finalizing his decision. If his choice is surgery, then he should consider robotic prostatectomy, which is rapidly becoming the preferred method, thanks to lower trauma and rapid recovery. It's important that his surgeon have a great deal of experience. A surgeon who has done 1000 prostatectomies would be a much better choice than one who has done 50. Although every urologist can perform this surgery, there are a small number of "artists", who are considered both by peers and patients to be more capable than average. He needs to find one of these surgeons. The probability of permanent impotence following surgery is anywhere from 20-70%, with the choice of surgeon being the key variable. And he will probably be incontinent for a period of time, with a small chance that this will be a lifetime condition.

Prostate Cancer - Surgery or Chemo

Prostate Cancer - Surgery or Chemo?
What would you do if you were diagnosed with Prostate Cancer? I am in early stages with a Gleason of 6 and PSA of 3.9 - 4.1.
Cancer - 3 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
Chemo is not a standard first-line treatment for people who have early stage prostate cancer. Surgery, radiation, or sometimes even active surveillance (no immediate treatment) are the options you and your cancer physicians (urologist, radiation oncologist, and medical oncologist) should discuss. Certainly you shouldn't embark on any one treatment until you have sought consultation with each of these physicians and understand the risks and benefits of each option.
2 :
I'm just recovering from prostate cancer (had prostate removed )its really a personal decision you and only you can make .I strongly suggest you start reading all you can about your personal options.Of course you need to have the trust of your DR. and consider his advise.I found it very helpful to chat with men that have gone through it and there thoughts of the choices the made.there are some very good web sites to go to to learn about your options.read read read then make your decision.God be with you and good luck
3 :
With those Gleason and PSA results, you have a very good chance of cure with either a radical prostatectomy or radon seed placement. Chemotherapy is contraindicated.

Is prostate cancer even dagerous, or is it something that can easily be cured by a quick

Is prostate cancer even dagerous, or is it something that can easily be cured by a quick,...?
,..."ABRACADABRA!" by your local magician at no charge, whereas curing breast cancer is not that simple? I find it both ridiculous AND annoying that there are so many organizations, places, and companies ONLY advertising to fight breast cancer with those pink ribbons. I have yet to see a place that advertises to fight prostate cancer and to show that blue ribbon that represents it. I really hope this annoying and excessive imbalance between support support and advertising of fighting breast cancer to prostate cancer is only a passing trend, a phase, that will hopefully end in 1 or 2 years, just like I'm hoping this whole unfortunate women kissing women will be like, hopefully just a passing trend where they start going for and preferring men again(if women like women THAT MUCH, this wouldn't be new, this'd be going on long before the 15th century and men getting with women would have ALWAYS been hard to accomplish for men). Campbells soup, one or two episodes of the gameshow Deal or No Deal, KFC around the mother's day holiday, Yahoo webpage, even EBAY.com... HEY!!!, maybe KFC will one day believe in equality and start advertising to fight prostate cancer around father's day! I just think it's really sick and messed up that too much damn attention is going toward breast cancer while places, organizations, gameshows, and websites barely or totally fail to acknowledge prostate cancer. I guess we're believe that men with prostate cancer aren't in danger at all. Either they just go to their local magician and have them say "ABRACADABRA!" at no charge, or maybe they just to go GNC and take a certain supplement and it goes away, while again, breast cancer is more dangerous and isn't that simple to cure. Unless that's the case, I think it's hightime websites and other types of companies start showing the blue ribbon and start advertising to fight prostate cancer as well. Or am I just overreacting?

2 :
Prostate cancer can easily be cured if caught early. The problem is men don't go for regular checkups, and by the time its discovered its very often too late. Breast cancer strikes women in the prime of life. The statistics are staggering. Its highly deadly. "While breast cancer is less common at a young age (i.e., in their thirties), younger women tend to have more aggressive breast cancers than older women, which may explain why survival rates are lower among younger women." Breast cancer also strikes men. So both sexes are at risk. Prostate cancer is primarily a disease of older men. Yes, I agree you could do with a Xanax. "According to the most recent data, for all men with prostate cancer, the relative 5-year survival rate is nearly100% and the relative 10-year survival rate is 91%. The 15-year relative survival rate is 76%. Keep in mind that 5-year survival rates are based on patients diagnosed and first treated more than 5 years ago, and 10-year survival rates are based on patients diagnosed more than 10 years ago. Modern methods of detection and treatment mean that many prostate cancers are now found earlier and can be treated more effectively. If you are diagnosed this year, your outlook is likely to be better than the numbers reported above."
3 :
The reason is because breast cancer kills or mutilates many more women than prostate cancer does to men. One is not more important than the other, it's just more prevalent. I think you're overreacting.
4 :
Give it time. The awareness campaign for prostrate cancer - and for men to have checks has been only a recent thing. Breat cancer awareness has been going on for a long time. In time advertising and acknowledgement of the condition will be equal to that of breast cancer and other common diseases. It should have been sooner but that's just the way it happened.
5 :
My father-in-law had prostate cancer, and although he underwent treatment and is cancer free at this point, his doctor said he could have left it untreated, and still had 15 or more years symptom free. Breast cancer moves quickly in nearly all cases, and so treating it quickly and aggressively is important - many with prostate cancer simply ignore it, and do just fine. In the long run, though, isn't research of ANY cancer treatment beneficial to the treatment of most other cancers? Understanding and paying attention to the disease is what's important, regardless of which part of the body gets it.
6 :
Well, men like Lance Armstrong are drumming up support for men who have cancer. I agree w/you. Men don't get enough attention when it comes to health. With that said too many men don't go to their doctor enough. Men, you need to be more proactive regarding your health.
7 :
It's not about women... It's a trend. If it was about women then cervical cancer would get as much attention, which it most obviously doesn't. Men can get breast cancer too. It's become a brand. People associate the colour pink with breast cancer. People are comfortable with talking about it. It's great it's getting so much attention but completely ridiculous other cancer charities are being ignored because of it. Prostate cancer isn't the only cancer being ignored and overshadowed by breast cancer. It's not a male vs. females thing... it's cancer. I don't know why people try to turn this into a gender issue. If you want to help how about donating to prostate cancer charities.
8 :
the prostate cancer awareness month is september and the ribbon is light blue. prostate cancer kills 30000 men in the us every year while breast cancer kills 40000 women and very occasionally some men too. the numbers are close. in the us the government spent $700 million on breast cancer, while prostate cancer received $500 million. the "Real Men Know All About It" campaign has been launched recently by the prostate cancer charity, and Boxer has teamed up with the Prostate Cancer Foundation to make new ads for awareness. most cities have their own grassroots organizations, like "Man to Man". you might want to join up and help raise awareness
9 :
Sheesh Heterosexual men won't even ask for directions when they get lost and would rather driver round and round in circles Women galvanise and drum up support Most men get prostate cancer in advanced years and don't die of it - they succumb to something else
10 :
You should get out there and start raising awareness rather than whining that other people won't do it for you, then! Breast cancer funding efforts are so successful because people actually get up and launch them.
11 :
There's nothing wrong with investing heavily in breast cancer research, prevention, detection and cures. But you are right that prostate cancer, which kills as many men as breast cancer kills women (see http://www.cancer.org/acs/groups/content/@epidemiologysurveilance/documents/document/acspc-026216.pdf - these are the statistics of the American Cancer Society). Indeed, men suffer from higher prostate cancer incidence rates than do women's breast cancer rates, the same mortality rates, and substantially more severe complications from treatment (these include incontinence, impotence, sterility, never having an orgasm again, incompetent bowels, etc.). And men also suffer from higher overall cancer incidence and mortality. Meanwhile, mainstream feminists have successfully blocked gender parity in federal funding for men's health. There are now 10 federal offices of women's health. There are zero offices of men's health. The federal government spends twice as much on women's health as men's health, though men die at higher rates from every major cause of death. You are right to be outraged. Of course, we all know that mainstream feminists have no shame. And how some of the responders to this question could write what they did, in light of the above statistics, is beyond me. Perhaps they have no shame either.
12 :
They need to change the colour from blue to transparent in order to reflect how invisible male specific cancers are to the public eye. Of course feminists don't mind this inequality because it gives women preferential monetary & research gains to the tune of 40x compared to prostate money & research. It's -yet another- area of inequality that feminists turn a blind eye. Strangely enough, all areas of inequality that feminists ignore happen to favour women over men. Amazing that, ain't it?
13 :
Yes, prostate cancer is dangerous. And the death rate is much higher than among breast cancer sufferers, the cure rate for breast cancer now is about 70%, whereas for prostate cancer it is only 44%. you are not overreacting.
14 :
When you̢۪re about to undergo some type of enlarged prostate treatment, it̢۪s necessary to first speak with your physician to find out if you̢۪re suffering from a simple case of a benign enlarged prostate gland or if the problem is much more serious. Once you receive confirmation about your condition, you must decide for yourself if the problem warrants immediate attention. Does it bother you? If the issue isn̢۪t that serious and you can live with the problem, it may be in your best interest to visit your doctor every so often to check it out. If, for whatever reason, you̢۪re bothered by the enlarged prostate symptoms or your doctor feels you̢۪re at a high risk for complications, there are several enlarged prostate treatments at your disposal.

Prostate cancer in your 30's?

Prostate cancer in your 30's?
ive been diagnosed with prostitus and a slightly enlarged prostate, and ive been sent for a psa blood test to see if its cancer, also a urine test to look for infection, im worried sick ive got prostate cancer, but im only 36, is it possible to get it
Cancer - 5 Answers

It's very rare to get it that young. You would be an outlier to get it that young b/c it would usually show up around age 50. Testicular cancer is a disease that can affect young people however and is much less likely as you grow older.
2 :
The other answerer is correct - it would be unusual at your age. Go to WebMd.com and type in prostatitis and read up on this condition and it's recommended treatments which may ease your mind a bit.
3 :
its possible
4 :
Prostate cancer is not diagnosed by a PSA and if you have prostatitis expect it to be elevated. Less than 1% of all prostate cancers occur in men under 45 years old.
5 :
Not very likely at your age. This type of cancer is an extremely slow one, so treatment options vary widely. See these links. Saw palmetto is your best, least expensive, safe, and effective bet. http://www.naturalnews.com/025859_cancer_Prostate_prostate_cancer.html http://www.cancertutor.com/Other/Prostate_Cancer.html

Can masturbation prevent prostate cancer

Can masturbation prevent prostate cancer?
... a research was done few years ago stating that this is the case. But how liable is this claim? What do you think?

I was wondering the same thing. Maybe it does since the prostate makes the seminal fluid, it makes sense to me that cleaning it out often would help it to not get stagnant but I don't really know about it. I hope thats true.
2 :
The studies you are refering to are from Australia and England. The references are on our website. According to the doctors I deal with on Prostate Cancer explain that it has no bearing on the disease.
3 :
No. Annual physicals after age 40 is the best prevention. If you get it, and they find it when it is small, the cure is fast and pain free.

No

Prostate cancer question

Prostate cancer question. . . .?
Is it true that if you had prostate cancer, you cant have sex anymore?
Cancer - 8 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
that is not entirely true. that being said it all depends on the treatment done or the treatment you are receiving Age is also a dependent factor
2 :
One patient I have known had his prostate removed thirty years ago and he reports to have had a very active sex life up until very recently (he̢۪s now 85). Although following the procedure he has been unable to produce any ejaculate, he said that he always believed his orgasms were even more intense and no less satisfying. Go to this site for more information: prostatecancerandsex.com/. Good luck with everything....
3 :
prostate adds bulk to semen.. you can do sex but fertility is lost...
4 :
Not entirely true. One of the side effects from the treatments for prostate cancer, prostate cancer itself, and just an enlarged prostate (BPH) is erectile dysfunction. It is difficult to get an erection and therefore, difficult to engage in sexual penetration. There are medications that help with this... ahem...Viagra. Although, that is not a guarantee. Some men, over time, develop the ability to maintain an erection after their prostate cancer surgery. It isn't a large number, but it can happen.
5 :
Untrue. Radical prostatectomy (removal of prostate) can result in damaging nerves involved in erectile function. This, & urinary incontinence may result from this surgery. It's not a given. Additionally, over the past several years, newer, less invasive approaches have been developed for treating prostatic ca (seed implantation, TUNA, etc.).
6 :
It depends on the surgery. I had my prostate removed using the DiVinci robot in January and had sex 5 weeks later (but had to use Viagara). Bit by bit, all of the nerves are coming back. As the others have already pointed out, without a prostate, there is no more wet spot - there is no ejaculate.
7 :
If you have Proton Radiation it does not effect your sexual ability. Proton radiation is very different from conventional radiation.. I had it about 3 years ago and am fine.. Proton radiation has no side effects most of the time and about a 90 % cure rate.. I believe it is the very best treatment availavle to day.. better than all the others.. no side effects and as good or better cure rate.. there is a website called Proton Bob that tells about it > if you check the website be sure and read the Patient testimonial section.... Also there is a new book just out by af former Prostate Cancer patient called You Can Beat Prostate CAncer.. It was written by Robert J. Marckini.. and it is a really great book. Any one with prostate problems should read it.. It tells all about Prostate Cancer and then discusses all of the treatments available today in detail.. giving the pros and cons of each treatment.. it is a really good book... hope this helps
8 :
Prostate Cancer Surgery can have a severe and permanent impact on sexual performance, but determination and the right rehab methods will get a lot of it back if it is started within the first year after surgery. The key is to find a specialist who knows how to treat erectile dysfunction issues, prescribe the correct meds, and give you the right tools to get it back. A strong relationship with a dedicated woman will contribute to success. She will need to care about you and be patient while you are recovering. You will no longer have the ability to have quick one-night-stands with someone you meet in a bar, because a stranger will not care about you enough to work through your performance issues. Over time, sexual performance after prostate surgery will be sufficient to have a good sex life with a caring and dedicated woman. It will be sufficient to perform nightly if that is what she wants.

Prostate cancer question. please help

Prostate cancer question. please help?
a loved one has been diagnosed with prostate cancer. he is 54 and the cancer was caught at an early stage and his bone scan came back negative. he is overweight but i dont know if that affects anything. he is supposed to be having the prostate removed within two to three weeks along with radiation. i love this person and i want to know what his survival rates are for beating this and living a normal life again.
Cancer - 3 Answers

1 :
About 99.2 as it stands right now. Don't worry he is not going to die.
2 :
There is no way to answer you without knowing the stage. The doctor will go over this with him after surgery. In a man this young prostectomy is nearly always recommended.
3 :
If it is diagnosed early ca.prostate then Laparoscopic radical prostatectomy is the best option and prognosis is very good. From the date of diagnosis, prostatectomy patients experienced an overall survival rate of 15.7 years, which is closest to the expected survival of 16.2 years. Approximately 75% of prostatectomy outcomes were progression free for 10.6 years or greater. Recurrence free success rate is above 90%.

Prostate cancer...help

prostate cancer...help?
is prostate cancer for old men only or it may affect a 18 yrs old guy as well ? does it has any relation with anal pain (which is without blood during defecation ) ?
Cancer - 7 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
What is prostate cancer? Prostate cancer is a malignant (cancerous) tumor (growth) that consists of cells from the prostate gland. The tumor usually grows slowly and remains confined to the gland for many years. During this time, the tumor produces little or no symptoms or outward signs (abnormalities on physical examination). As the cancer advances, however, it can spread beyond the prostate into the surrounding tissues (local spread). Moreover, the cancer also can metastasize (spread even farther) throughout other areas of the body, such as the bones, lungs, and liver. Symptoms and signs, therefore, are more often associated with advanced prostate cancer. http://www.medicinenet.com/prostate_cancer/article.htm
2 :
Prostate cancer can affect anyone at any age. Blood during defecation should always be checked out, as colon cancer can also be a factor. If there is a tumor or a lump in there it could very well be the cause of the blood. A little bit of blood is normal if your stool is really hard, but if it's concerning you, please go and get a physical and bring this up with your doctor immediately. Good luck and take care!
3 :
Prostate cancer is so rare in young men that there are no statistics available for the disease incidence in men under 35. It's extremely rare in men under 50; over 80% of men diagnosed with it are over 65 and half of all cases occur in men over 75. No, anal pain and pain during defecation aren't symptoms of prostate cancer.
4 :
Prostate cancer is the third most common cause of death from cancer in men of all ages and is the most common cause of death from cancer in men over 75 years old. Prostate cancer is rarely found in men younger than 40. Examination should be done gently and with good lighting. It consists of external inspection, perianal and intrarectal digital palpation, abdominal examination, and rectovaginal bidigital palpation. Anoscopy and rigid or flexible sigmoidoscopy to 15 to 60 cm above the anal verge are often included. Inspection, palpation, and anoscopy and sigmoidoscopy are best done with the patient in the left lateral (Sims') position or inverted on a tilt table. In cases of painful anal lesions, topical ( lidocaine 5% ointment), regional, or even general anesthesia may be required. If it can be tolerated, a cleansing phosphate enema may facilitate sigmoidoscopy. Biopsies, smears, and cultures may be taken, and x‑ray examination ordered if indicated. Consult a gastroenterologist.

My husband was dx with Pca at 42. His physician told him he also has a patient who is only 32 with the disease. I don't think that your symptoms and your age point to prostate cancer, however, I believe that you should seek medical attention. The bleeding could be as simple as a hemorrhoid. It could also be caused by colitis, diverticulitis or a po

Radioactive bud implants have good results. Depends on the size of tumor if surgical cure is indicated. Causes are same for all cancers-DNA replication errors accumulated over much time due to mineral insufficiencies.

Prostate cancer-in young male

prostate cancer-in young male?
I am a 31 years of Male. My doc found small blood in urine while doing dipstick ( i had fever). But with microscopic UA there was no RBC and WBC. Can i have prostate cancer? What should i do next? Please help me out. Am i going to die? Please help

I have checked my crystal ball, and indeed you will be dying. However, further vibrations tell me that you may be suffering from hypochondria, a non-fatal affliction of the intellect.
2 :
Eat raw broccoli. Raw broccoli (and carrots) cure cancer.
3 :
Vsq, Find another doc. At 31 years of age, your chance of having prostate cancer is about zero. Because you did not mention frequent urination or burning when you pee, it is not likely to be a urine or bladder infection, though the prostate might be where an infection could be found. If there were any RBCs in your urine, they could break up so that no intact RBCs would be seen microscopically, BUT the hemoglobin from the disrupted RBCs would give a dipstick positive blood (hemoglobin) test. There is a better dipstick which tests only 2 things - the presence of bacteria and the presence of WBCs. That dipstick should have been used. Is it possible that a sexual contact could have given you gonorrhea, which, if it happened, might produce a pus-like discharge within 1-3 days after exposure? Then again, the fever could have been caused by something else developing in your body.

My grandfather had prostate cancer We were all shocked to find it out & no one expected it. There was a lot of pain involved for him & he was sick from chemo He also had lots of trips to the doctor. He took chemo and had some sort of procedure done to keep his urethra open. The latter was performed almost as regularly as his chemo. He always valued life very much but I guess when he thought he was gonna die that yeah he took every second to live to the fullest. He moved in with us during treatment. No. I don't think enough is done for any cure research for any disease. No we just loved him with all our hearts like always. I have always felt sympathy for the ill. I hope so, but only time will tell.
