His surgery is called a T.U.R.P. Trans urethral resection of the prostate. The prostate is a gland that looks like a donut and is at the base of the bladder where the urethra passes through it. The surgeon will go in with a scope and ream out the prostate to remove it. The prostate is one gland that never stops growing. Many older men have to have it removed because it interferes with their peeing, especially at night when they are trying to sleep. Because the prostate is so enlarged, they are never able to fully empty their bladder, so it seems like they have to pee more often. Many men get bladder infections from not emptying their bladders. Bladder infections are very rare in males. Your dad my have to stay in the hospital overnight, but can also be done as a day surgery. Don't be alarmed if you go to visit him and his pee has a lot of blood in the catheter bag. That will clear soon. Talk to your dad's doctor about his prognosis if your dad won't tell you. The best time to do that is right after surgery when the doctor comes out to talk to the family or at his post-op visit. I sounds to me llike they got it faily early.

Actually, men who ejaculate more often are less likely to get prostate cancer. Also, genetics play a role in as well.
2 :
NO BUT YOU CAN GET WANKERS CRAMP
3 :
No. Prostate cancer is really, really, really rare in people under 30 years old. It is not caused by masterbation. It occurs when cells in the prostate mutate then grow out of control. Older age, family members w/ the disease, smoking, lack of exercise and good diet, and radiation exposure are the things that increase your risk. Masterbating is not unhealthy in any way, unless the act or thought of it interferes with your school work, family life, or emotions. It is completely normal and everyone does it. There is no reason for you to worry. Just be private about it, and don't AT ALL worry about prostate cancer till you are older. Best of luck.
4 :
Yes, the more you masturbate the bigger your prostate gets. If you do it six times a day it will get as big as a softball and eventually explode. It's not cancer and won't kill you, but after your prostate explodes your pecker falls off and you grow breasts.
5 :
It's the other way around. Masterbating is actually healthy for you. It'll help prevent getting prostate cancer when you get older. It's good to ejaculate and let some of that out, you're body produces alot anyways. However, just don't make it become an addiction where it interfere's with your daily life. If it doesn't, then you're fine.
6 :
ROFLMAO I know of no teenager that would worry about such a thing! What has your big brother been telling you? And didn't you learn after the last time? = ]
7 :
Prostate cancer is preceeded by certain symptoms (in most cases) that indicate a disorder: an inability to urinate properly is one of them- you will dribble instead. Masturbation will not cause it, and is indicated that it can reduce risks of prostate disorder if done in moderation. Regular masturbation at your age should cause no harm but, as with most things sexual, keep it discrete.
8 :
No. It's perfectly normal to masturbate and it does not cause prostate cancer. It makes you go blind.

What does the prostate gland do, and why is it so susceptable to cancer

What does the prostate gland do, and why is it so susceptable to cancer?
I have been told that the recommended age to get the prostate checked, is 40 years old. What is the significance of that age? Is is just random? Is it that studies and current evidence show that problems with the prostate tend to show up at 40, but not earlier?

the prostate is a walnut sized gland that encircled the urethra, the tube through which urine passes. This gland produces the seminal fluid, it forms most of the ejaculation. They don't know the exact reason, but there is evidence that a high-fat diet may play a role in promoting it's development. Recurring prostate infections and a genetic predisposition to prostate cancer are also possible factors. When a man reaches middle age, it often starts growing. It appears to be mainly caused by hormonal changes associated with aging.

Men with prostate cancer

Men with prostate cancer?
My dad was just recently diagnosed with prostate cancer. He has received the hormone injections to slow the growing of the tumor (unfortunately, the cancer has spread to his lymph nodes, but fortunately not to the organs or bones). He is scheduled to get the seeds implanted sometime this month. Has anyone gone through this before? Will he get really sick from it? How do I help him cope?

Just be very positive for him, dads get more worried and upset when they see their family upset.i wish you all the best.
2 :
A lot also depends on how old your father is....Younger people have more fast growing tumors. Yes keep up the good spirits...do not worry, make the best out of every situation and love to be. I would learn EFT for you and your dad and others to cope with this situation. Think positive thoughts that can heal tremendously...see the DVD the secret.
3 :
He should not get sick from the radiation - the material they use is for very localized treatment. He may find himself with very little warning before he urinates and he may have to wear some type of small diaper etc. If he is quite elderly - there is a good chance that something else will kill befroe the cancer does.
4 :
Seeds will not make him sick, although there are occasionally complications. The hormones will have more of an effect. Hormone treatment is basically chemical castration...it reduces the production of testosterone. He will experience a reduction in libido, softening of secondary sexual characteristics, and may have hot flashes, similar to a woman in menopause. The hormones are probably being administered temporarily to shrink his prostate in order to make it more accessible for seeding. The effects will reverse once he's off them. I'm surprised they aren't supplementing the seeds with beam radiation, since the cancer has already reached the lymph nodes. (How do they know it reached the nodes?)

Having a PSA=4.85 at the age of 45 with no symptom at all could mean prostate cancer

Having a PSA=4.85 at the age of 45 with no symptom at all could mean prostate cancer...?
The doctor after the finger examination suggested to redo PS test because he did not find anything suspicious and patient is not having any irregularities urinating (need to urinate frequently, pain, holding back or interruptive flow of urine, dificultie having an erection, blood in urine or semen, stiffness in the lower back). Is it possible a human error from the lab like the blood of somebody else...?

I have recently met a fellow who had no symptoms, normal PSA, normal digital exam, BUT, had a family history of prostate cancer (IE father and brother). His doctor wanted to do a biopsy, sure enough he found cancer, the guy ended up having his prostate removed.
2 :
4.85 is high. i guess a retest just to make sure there wasnt a mistake is a good idea. if it comes back high again, they need to start doing some tests. the finger only feels the back side of the gland. the growths can be on the other side where a finger wont feel them. the high psa is an idication something is going on there. that doesnt mean cancer, but it means something isnt right.
3 :
The PSA test is not intended to be used to diagnose prostate cancer - its way too unreliable. It's purpose is to screen people to see if more reliable tests are warranted. In general, values under 4 are considered normal, and values above abnormal. The problem is that people with levels of 2 can have cancer and people with levels of 6 can be perfectly fine. The PSA test becomes much more meaningful if you track the levels over a series of tests space several months apart. If the levels are stable or declining, this is a pretty reliable indication that cancer is not present.
4 :
this is a high reading and you require a complete evaluation to rule out Carcinoma Prostate.
