Prostate cancer - side effects of radiation therapy

Prostate cancer - side effects of radiation therapy?
My husbane started radiation therapy today to treat prostate cancer. His doctors have advised him that there will be no side effects apart from perhaps some fatigue towards the end of the course of treatment. He has a stressful job and is concerned that the therapy may affect his ability to work at some stage. Has anyone reading this had this treatment? What, if any, side effects did you experience and how were they treated? He is 60 and the cancer was detected in its very early stages.

Everyone responds differently as their bodies are different. However, the doctors probably are your best source for the side effects of his therapy. If he is experiencing fatigue, he should limit the amount of activity outside of work, and rest more on his off work hours. A lot of people have develop some anemia and other vitamin and mineral deficiency problems during radiation and or chemo. Ask his doctor if taking a multi vitamin/mineral supplement would be beneficial. Fuzzy

Why do African-Americans have the highest risk of getting Prostate Cancer

Why do African-Americans have the highest risk of getting Prostate Cancer?

I hate to say it but it's because a lot of people in the culture do not get regular check ups. Meaning it could be prevent but it's less likely for them to check. Not that they are prone to this awful affliction but because less people stop it from getting that far.
2 :
There was a study conducted that suggets obesity may be a part of the reason. Obesity tends to be more common in African American men than men of other ethnic backgrounds.
3 :
The above is correct by Kay O in addition to the fact they are more prone to cancer as well as high blood pressure and diabetes. Just as those of the Mediterranean sect are more prone to taysachs.
4 :
It's a combination of factors, as many causes of disease are. Just like most other cancers, prostate cancer can be affected by nutrition, genetics and medical care. In the African-American community, prostate cancer has been linked to poor eating habits (and thereby also correlates with obesity). It has also been linked to mutations in genes involved in normal cell death (bcl-2 gene, for one) that would fight cancer. And lastly, African-American men (of all ethnic groups) are less likely to go in for diagnostic testing, especially before symptoms appear (when it already may be too late). It's the combination of all of these factors that make them an "at-risk" population.
5 :
It may be due to sensitivity to testosterone. Testosterone has an impact on the growth of prostate cancer, which is why those with this cancer have their testosterone chemically blocked to prevent the cancer growing. Anyway, recent research has shown that testosterone sensitivity may be related to the repeated appearance of specific trinucleotides (CAG) bundled up together on the androgen receptor gene. The lower the number of repeats , the more sensitive to testosterone the man is. This bundling & therefore sensitivity is more common in men of African origin &, hey presto, so is prostate cancer. Seems a remarkable coincidence & no doubt one being investigated as you read this.

Can a child get prostate cancer

Can a child get prostate cancer?
Can a child get prostate cancer.... i dont know why when i came back today i keep peeing but the pee was just few small drops.. is it because i hold my pee and it was very urgent when i was watching a movie...

Yes a child can. You would most likley get a urinary tract infection by doing that too often.
2 :
First of all, are you male? If so, you have a prostate and if not, you don't have a postate. It could be a simple urinary tract infection and not cancer. Prostate cancer is generally linked with old age in men when the prostate enlarges. If your problem persists tell your parents so that they can take you to a doctor. Don't start imagining things nasty like cancer.
3 :
No, a child cannot get prostate cancer. prostate cancer is rare for males under the age of 45. some easy cancer articles I read here. http://medvibes.com/
4 :
Sounds like a Urinary Tract Infection to me. Prostate cancer is a disease of age, though there are other cancers that effect children in the area.

How survivable is prostate cancer today

How survivable is prostate cancer today?

There are a number of very effective treatment options for prostatic cancer--so the cure/survival rate (prognosis) is good to very good....BUT the key factor is early detection. After age 50, I insist that all my male patients get their prostate checked annually. The sooner a problem is identified the sooner treatment can be initiated.

My Uncle last year had prostate cancer and went through the surgery. Today he is doing pretty well for all that he has been through. He is still wearing what he calls man diapers at this time which kind of discourages him. The bladder kind of has a mind of it's own. He is taking meds to help with that and the doctor's tell him that this is all normal. All in all the cancer is gone and he is just getting through these minor problems at this time. I hope you the best! Hope this helps.
3 :
By and large prostate cancer patients are elderly and tend to die of old age long before the cancer gets resistant to therapy

my father has the same problem he has been in clean of cancer for 6 months after taking the melaleuca products. check this out www.livetotalwellness.com/brandy and put in prostatic helath. it helped my father and it only cost us about 85.00 a month for everything

I'm sorry to have to telll you this, but they usually don't give insurance to people with pre-existing conditions (especially something like cancer). Talk to his doctors and the hospital. I know some hospitals have hardship programs where you apply (kind of like financial aid for school) and they may clear his bills. Just remember, he can't be denied care just because he doesn't have insurance.
3 :
Go to a municiple hosptal's Urology clinic and exaggerate a bit..eg..bloody urine, bone pain.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but he will not qualify for any individual health plan, cheap or otherwise, to help him with the costs. He does have three options. First option; get a job with health benefits. There may be a waiting period but at least he'll get coverage. Second option; apply for Medicaid. He will have to qualify with low income and low assets. Third option; pay cash. You can negotiate a cash price for the services received, which can be as low as half of what they normally charge. If you can't pay all at once, most doctors and hospitals will work with you for payment. You may get answers here concerning medical discount cards. Be very wary of these cards. They are not regulated by the Department of Insurance nor do the people that sell them need to be licensed. This means you have little recourse when you have problems with the plan. If you are tempted by the low price and claims of “save up to 80% be aware that very few doctors actually take these cards. It does you little good if you have to drive 4 hours to find a doctor that will accept the card. Montana couldn’t find any doctors in the whole state that actually took the card and only one dentist who was on probation for unlawful activities so they banned the sale of the card and fined the company. See this link http://www.insurancejournal.com/news/west/2006/11/22/74554.htm for more information. Many other states are starting to ban these cards as well.

I just came across this website, you may find many useful information on health insurance quotes, hopefully may help you: http://all-health-insurance-quotes.blogspot.com
7 :
If you can't afford health insurance, you should definatley check out Ameriplan USA. They are the #1 health and dental benefits company in the US, with over 140 million customers. You can expect to save up to 80% off your care. The cost of the plans are your choice, between $29.95-$59.95 a month for your entire household. Check out www.mybenefitsplus.com/lgraham Good luck to you!!!
8 :
Some of these answers are good, others are overboard. The best way to get treatment is to look through www.clinicaltrials.gov to see if your father can qualify for treatment that is standard treatment but done to see how effective it is when you change certain conditions. You may have to go to a large hospital or clinic that performs these trials to see what is best for your father. The treatment is standard and doesn't cost a patient anything. Good luck!
9 :
I'm sorry to hear about your father's diagnosis. I hope they caught it early. I want you to also know that many drug companies will give free or discounted drug to people who can't afford it. There will be income/asset requirements, but it is worth checking out as treatment can be very expensive. Blessings to your family.

Does drinking milk cause prostate cancer?
If it is so bad for you then why doesnt the food and drug administration do something about it ?? I keep hearing people say that it can increase the risk of prostate cancer !! whaaaaaaaat ??? Why??? is there a valid explanation for this ?? dammn!!!! prostate cancer is not a joke people !! it is PAAAAAAAAinnnnnnnnnnful!!! Im already traumatized about pizza ,fast food, and diabetes? not to mention the nasty taste of vegetables !!! damm!! everything we eat causes death .. Ima try not eating and see what happens..

A diet HIGH in dairy is thought to be a POSSIBLE risk factor for prostate cancer - not the same thing at all as 'drinking milk causes prostate cancer'. A risk factor is not a cause; 'being male' is a recognised risk factor for heart disease, but being male doesn't cause heart disease. And diabetes is not caused by diet. Type one diabetes is an auto-immune condition unconnected to diet, and type two diabetes is not caused by diet - except in as much as being significantly overweight is a very common risk factor. No particular foods cause or promote it - although should you be diagnosed with it it is very often treated by diet alone, and certainly pizza and fast food are things you would have to limit or preferably avoid to control your blood glucose levels
