Having a PSA of 85, what are the chances of having progressed prostate cancer

Having a PSA of 85, what are the chances of having progressed prostate cancer?

The PSA test has become more and more unreliable and doctors don't use it like this did years ago. The PSA can be high with no prostate cancer present. Nurse Kindheart

Immediately find yourself a urologist, and have a prostate biopsy. The chances of Prostate Cancer with a confirmed PSA of this magnitude are extremely high! If you value your time remaining on this earth, please do this. From the "PSA Rising" site: (http://www.psa-rising.com/prostatecancer/psa-test.htm) "Elevated PSA levels in a man who has never been treated for prostate cancer may be a sign of any prostate problem. PSA rise may indicate prostatitis (infection). It may indicate benign growth or swelling of the prostate (BPH). Or it may indicate prostate cancer. PSA is made in the prostate. It is measured in nanograms per milliliter of blood. Normally, PSA levels in the blood remain very low. Any hurt to or injury of the normal prostate, such as from inflammation caused by infection, may cause more PSA to leak into the bloodstream. In the past, most doctors considered PSA values below 4.0 ng/ml as normal. However, recent research found prostate cancer in men with PSA levels below 4.0 ng/ml. Many doctors are now using the following ranges, with some variation: 0 to 2.5 ng/ml is low 2.6 to 10 ng/ml is slightly to moderately elevated 10 to 19.9 ng/ml is moderately elevated 20 ng/ml or more is significantly elevated This new approach reflects the fact that relatively low PSA levels in the blood may mask some aggressive prostate cancers. Rate of PSA over time is a key factor in diagnosing prostate cancer. This is sometimes called PSA velocity and sometimes calculated as "PSA doubling time." In men with prostate cancer, tumor doubling time ranges from a month or two to over 12 or 15 years. PSA doubling time is a pretty reliable indicator of cancer cell doubling although not a sufficient indicator without biopsy and imaging scans."

What does the pituitary gland have to do with prostate cancer

what does the pituitary gland have to do with prostate cancer?

Cancer - 3 Answers

1 :
pituitary gland is responsible for the reproductive organs in males, essentially, if the pituitary gland stops working, chaos.
2 :
As Katy C answered, the pituitary gland is in charge of releasing hormones, both in males and females. Prostate cancer is a type of cancer that affects a part of the male sex-organ system; the prostate is in charge of making part of the fluid in semen. Hormones are required for producing semen, and thus comes in the pituitary gland. Without the pituitary gland, the prostate would have no spark to get it going: hormones.
3 :
It is a bit complicated, but this link explains it. In a short simple form, the pituitary gland initiates a sequence of events that ends in the production of testosterone. Testosterone can make the cells of prostate cancer grow and reproduce more quickly. I learned quite a lot about this sort of thing when my husband was diagnosed with prostate cancer.

I would like for someone who has/had prostate cancer to answer a couple of questions for me. Did you get really aggressive toward ppl? If so, have you gotten over it?

Survivor here. You're asking an excellent question. The answer is that the cancer itself has no direct effect on behavior. But a lot of men act defensively, because the disease forces you to balance intensely personal issues like continence and potency against survival. I think most men have difficulty dealing with such intimate subjects. For those who can't overcome this, anger is the result. This is usually directed against anyone who tries to get "inside" and help. Sometimes it's directed at anything which poses even the remotest challenge to their manhood. If you have someone in this situation, all you can do is educate yourself about the disease, and try to be helpful where you can. Most PCa support groups welcome family members for this reason.

Ginger and Green Tea: The 5-LO Inhibitors Researchers have discovered an important link between nutrition and cancer. It is the enzyme 5 Lipoxygenase (or 5-LO for short). 5-LO metabolizes arachidonic acid to produce a chemical called 5-HETE that feeds prostate cancer cells. Without the essential food 5-HETE, prostate cancer cells cannot thrive. Fortunately, many common foods like ginger and green tea are natural 5-LO inhibitors that prevent the metabolization of arachidonic acid into 5-HETE. That explains why the lower mortality rate from prostate cancer in cultures that regularly consume ginger, green tea, and other 5-LO inhibitors. " Try Body Ecology's Green Tea Concentrate for a delicious dose of 5-LO inhibitors and drink to your health. "

Prostate Cancer Treatments For Early And Advanced Prostate Cancer http://howtotreatcancer.com/    There is a wide range of prostate cancer treatments available today for both early and late stage prostate cancer and this article outlines the choices open to patients. There is a wide range of prostate cancer treatments available today and the treatment that your doctor recommends will depend to a very large extent upon the progression of the disease. Thereafter it is a matter of discussing each treatment option with your doctor and of considering the advantages and disadvantages of each, as well as of course looking carefully at the risks which all prostate cancer treatments carry. Prostrate cancer treatments fall into two broad categories - those that are recommended for early (Stage I and Stage II) cancer which is confined to the prostate gland and those used to treat advanced (Stage III and Stage IV) cancer which has spread to other areas of the body. Early stage cancer treatments are designed to remove the prostate or to destroy it and thus to stop the cancer cells before they have a chance to spread to other areas of the body. http://www.cancertruth.info/ The surgical removal of the prostate gland (prostatectomy) will normally be carried out as either traditional open surgery or using a less invasive laparoscopic approach. One recent development is the introduction of robotic surgery (using the da Vinci system) which has the advantage of preserving nerves, muscles and other structures in the area of the prostate. Robotic surgery is extremely effective but should be carried out by a highly skilled surgeon in a centre with considerable experience in using this technique. Radiation therapy may also be used to kill the cancer cells within the prostate gland. A variety of different radiation therapy techniques may be used and treatment will normally be carried out over a period of several weeks. A relatively new technique, which is still being evaluated, is known as cryosurgery. During cryosurgery, which is carried out under anesthesia, cooling probes are guided into the prostate using ultrasound and the cancer cells are killed by freezing them. The final form of treatment used for early stage cancer is high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU). This procedure is again carried out under anesthesia (or using a local spinal anesthetic) and a probe is placed into the prostate gland through the rectum. A beam of high intensity focused ultrasound is them used to raise the temperature in the area of focus and thus to kill the cancer cells. For late stage prostate cancer hormone therapy is used and this is designed not to attack the cancer itself but to target the male hormones (in particular testosterone) which the cancer cells need to grow. Late stage treatments will include orchiectomy (the removal of the testicles), which is designed to remove the source of the body's main production of testosterone, or a variety of hormone treatments aimed at either reducing the level of testosterone and other male hormones in the body or of blocking their action. In cases where hormone therapy proves ineffective, systematic radiation therapy or chemotherapy may be recommended. Whatever the stage of your cancer it is important to consider all of the options carefully and weigh the advantages, disadvantages and risks of each carefully before choosing the treatment that is best for you. IMPORT E - Before surgery, a number of tests are performed to determine the extent of the disease. These tests included blood tests, transrectal ultrasound, and a prostate biopsy. In selected patients, a bone scan, and a CT or MRI scan of the abdomen and pelvis may be done. A physical examination was performed and the various types of anesthesia are discussed with anesthesiologists. This will occur before surgery. However, usually he may begin a bowel prep. at home on the day before your surgery. This is done to cleanse the bowel and may consist of a clear liquid diet, medication to promote bowel movements, and/or an enema. This is routine preparation before many types of major abdominal surgery.

Why is it important to know about prostate cancer

Just a thought: Connection between ejaculation frequency and prostate health http://www.goaskalice.columbia.edu/4961.html QUESTION: have been coming across articles on the connection between masturbation, ejaculation, and overall health. I was very surprised about this article from the Cancer Council Victoria in Australia . It was a study that confirmed that ejaculation frequency is important for a healthy prostate. The protective effect was most significant in men in their twenties who ejaculated on average 7 or more times per week. It compared this against same-age men who ejaculated less than 3 times per week. I made a New Year's resolution to pay attention to my body and to cum at least once a day. I feel much better for it and my penis strength and sexual urge has increased immensely. I feel balanced. After a year, I can't imagine going back to my old repressed frequency and probably couldn?t keep from cumming for a whole day if I tried now. Why aren?t people made aware of this need? After getting used to daily +, I often have the urge to do it even more, but hold back. Are there any physical problems with over ejaculating? ANSWER: What a fabulous New Year’s resolution to pay attention to your body! Your efforts are worth applauding, as being in tune with yourself and your new masturbation schedule seems to have paid off, as you note that you feel “balanced and “much better for it. Happily, no physical problems are associated with over-ejaculating, so don’t worry about giving in to the natural urge to enjoy and pleasure yourself more often. You clearly have a strong awareness of the positive effects of masturbation on your body, so go ahead and experiment with masturbation frequency – in this way, you can determine what frequency feels best for you and your regular routine. You also ask why people aren’t made aware of the “need to masturbate often. Good question – especially in light of the study’s findings that frequent ejaculation helps reduce the risk of prostate cancer. Unfortunately, self-stimulation – as with most sexual acts – is often viewed as shameful, dirty, immoral, and all sorts of other negative adjectives. Wouldn’t it be great if masturbation could be seen as the healthy, enjoyable, and beneficial activity it really is, openly talked about and (gasp!) endorsed? Perhaps one day it will be – with more people like you who are open-minded and bold enough to talk about it in a positive light. Enjoy – and pass that article along to friends, family, neighbors, co-workers, and anybody and everybody else! ------------------------

Because early treatment can cure it, or at least prolong your life.
5 :
well, if you have one or you are a doctor doign medical exams it is definitely important since cancer kills and early discovery often results in the treatments being way more effective than if it isn't caught early. Also remember that regular masturbation has been shown to significantly reduce the risk...

It is important to know about any kind of cancer. I have always believed that the mainstream medical industry is not interested in finding a cure for cancer because it makes too much profit with its present barbarous methods. Eventually, I came across a detailed report which agreed with my findings, and I have included it in my web page at http://dgwa1.fortunecity.com/body/cancer.html By reading this report, you will also convince yourself that it is best to ignore the mainstream cancer industry, and seek alternative cures. Also you should bear in mind that the medical industry will do anything to protect its profitable position, including disparaging alternative healers or even creating bogus court cases. I believe that cancer is a whole body thing, which in 80 percent of cases manifests itself by producing symptoms in the weaker parts of the body, and therefore appearing localised. It is this treatment of symptoms instead of cause which creates the profitable, yet non-successful approach of mainstream medicine. Some cures are listed on the web page too. It is therefore obvious that a holistic approach is required, based on cleansing, diet, exercise and debugging. CLEANSING The best way of cleansing is to fast. http://www.phifoundation.org/menses.html http://www.healthy.net/scr/article.asp?ID=1996 but if a patient is too weak for that, or does not fancy the idea, then alternative cleanses are available. Drinks should be clean water or freshly squeezed orange juice. Many researchers promote the benefits of vitamin B17 as a healer. this can be found in the following foods: Apple seeds, alfalfa sprouts, apricot kernels, bamboo shoots, barley, beet tops, bitter almond, blackberries, boysenberries, brewer’s yeast, brown rice, buckwheat, cashews, cherry kernels, cranberries, currants, fava beans, flax seeds, garbanzo beans, gooseberries, huckleberries, lentils, lima beans, linseed meat, loganberries, macadamia nuts, millet, millet seed, peach kernels, pecans, plum kernels, quince, raspberries, sorghum cane syrup, spinach, sprouts (alfalfa, lentil, mung bean, buckwheat, garbanzo), strawberries, walnuts, watercress, yams. Are there any effective treatments for advanced prostate cancer?

Radiation therapy worked for a friend of mine wiht prostate cancer. He has gone into remission.
2 :
Hormone shots can help some but otherwise if it is advanced and has spread there is not much you can do for it.
3 :
My PSA was shooting up rapidly so my doctor put me on external X-ray. I had to go on this large machine that circled my body concentrating massive X-ray on the cancer. Treatments were daily for about two months. The effects of the rays were not pleasant. Somehow, the cancerous spot was missed. It was all for nothing. Next, I was put on the "golden" shots. Gold, not because of the material or the color - - - but the cost. One shot per month. After about two years, my PSA came down to almost zero. It's beginning to sneak up a little again now. Other treatments are implanting radioactive "seeds" into the prostate gland, and complete removal of the gland. Talk over the possibilities with your doctor. Be sure to understand each of the methods. Take his advice on which method he would use if he had the cancer. And please remember that having prostate cancer is not necessarely the end of the line. I'm well up in age, and doing fine. I wish you the very best of luck.
4 :
My dad has been getting Zoladex "injections" which is really an implant in the abdomen for a couple years and it has brought his numbers down a lot. If you are too advanced you may need to combine the zoladex with radiation.
5 :
I have read this and I couldnt believe what I was reading. You dont have to believe me if you dont want to, but in my opinion, its worth a try. I went on a reputable site for all sorts of cancers. They told me that for prostate cancer I should be taking a cup of fresh red raspberries a day for however long I need it. This is what it said. The website is full of natural cures for cancers and alternative cures for cancer. You can try it, it doesnt hurt, and its inexpensive. Also, you can also try aloe vera. This is really big in my country so dont think Im just thowing things at ya.....Buy a fresh aloe vera plant from a flower shop. Cut off the pricks. Cut a chunk off and throw it into a blender with vanilla ice cream. This is going to be extremely bitter so try your best. This has been proven in my country to cure cancer. If you can force the doctors to give you Vitamin C, it would be AWESOME. This is a really good cure for cancer, but doctors have been covering it up becaus eits soo cheap, natural, and everybody knows about it. The only thing is, you have to get the liquid form that goes straight itno your blood. The amount/formula for the vitamin C is going to be 1 mmol/L and/or 10 grams per 12 hours. This is the amount they are supposed to give you. Now you really have to force them to do this because they will say that theres no point, etc, etc. Get a doctor's note from your family physician....(hehe..getting a doctors note for a doctor....as if we are all in high school again...) and have him or her tell the hospital that you really need it for your cold or something like that....Good luck...
6 :
You might want to look into Provenge. It is a new cancer vaccine that may be approved soon. Here is the website: WWW.DENDREON.com They have an ongoing clinical trial at this time

Does masturbating cause prostate cancer

does masturbating cause prostate cancer?
Hi im 16 years old and I masturbate one time a day. I saw a study that says masturbating in your younger years causes prostate cancer. Is this true. Doesn't every male masturbate

actually its the opposite, it helps prevent prostate cancer and if that were true every male would have prostate cancer lol
2 :
No, to the contrary, masturbation helps to keep the fluid moving through your prostate. With each ejaculation you are cleaning out toxins that settle in prostate. The prostate is a part of your body's filtration system. And yes, just about every guy does it, may not admit to it, but most do.
3 :
No. The study you read must be way out of date. Maturbation helps protect the prostate from prostatitis and cancer. M.
4 :
If it was true every male would have prostate cancer. And the surgeon general would outlaw it. lol
5 :
wrong! totally wrong actually. Masturbation will prevent you from getting prostate cancer. You should masturbate regularly because it's healthy
6 :
Masturbating does NOT cause prostate cancer. I masturbate once a day, and had been masturbating for 26 years.
7 :
Just another myth of the evils of masturbation. If this were true there be millions of men today who now have prostate cancer.
